As a rule, old doors have a high-strength panel and a high-quality box, but the appearance deteriorates over time due to the thick coating. As one of the budget updating methods, ordinary paint for wooden doors is used. In this material you will learn how to paint wooden doors, and get acquainted with other modern ways of renovating a coating at home.
The choice of paints and varnishes
Paintwork materials are classified according to the following criteria:
- Composition (water and organic based);
- By protective action (against organic and chemical substances, mechanical influences, changes in humidity and temperature);
- According to the method of use (internal, external, combined);
- By type (impregnation, paints, stains, varnishes).
1. Paints. Can be used for processing new and old doors. There are no difficulties with the choice, but because of incompetence, people choose the wrong material. Paint and varnish compositions are transparent and opaque. The first compounds include certain pigments that exhibit a woody structure. But often opaque coatings are used, consisting of organic solvents (oil, alkyd and other types).
The most popular is alkyd enamel, the cost of which is affordable. This coating has high strength, a wide range of shades. But the enamel smells bad, its unpleasant smell remains for 2 days, so they work with her on the street, first removing the canvas from the hinges or freeing the room. An alternative solution is acrylic enamel, which also has many colors but no toxic odor. The dried paint does not have much strength, so it is additionally treated with acrylic varnish to protect against mechanical stress.
A more resistant coating for wood doors is nitro-paint, which has optimal strength. The composition is toxic, sometimes leads to allergic manifestations, so you need to work with it in protective equipment. If the old surface is treated with nitro-paint, the preparation and grinding of the panel to a light shade is carried out in advance.
2. Lucky. Relate to traditional coatings that give wood shine and protect its surface. Typically, varnish is used when coating doors in rooms with high humidity (baths and saunas).
There are many different varnishes:
- Acrylic. The material is resistant to adverse effects, humidity and ultraviolet. Distinguish matte and glossy coating without toxic smell.
- Nitrocellulose. Varnish can handle wooden doors. The coating is not suitable for processing bathrooms and baths, as it has insufficient strength and quickly cracks.
- Water based varnish. It has no unpleasant odor. Due to different additives, material properties may vary.
- Polyurethane The varnish has high strength and adhesion to wood, it is matte, semi-gloss and gloss. In addition to wood, polyurethane varnishes can be applied to parquet, veneer, tabletop.
- Oil varnish. There is no pungent odor. The composition contains a lot of greasy resins, so the old coating is removed from the door in advance. It is better to apply with a brush due to the thick consistency.
- Polyester. The composition has a pungent odor, is highly durable, but toxic, so it is suitable for processing street doors.
It is better to paint interior doors with acrylic or polyurethane coatings, and for exterior work or rooms with high humidity, resistant materials are suitable.
3. Stains. The task of such compounds is the tinting of the tree and temporary protection from negative influences. But constant updating of a layer which emphasizes a wood structure is required.
There are several options:
- With a varnish basis (azure). The composition reduces the duration of the work, but it is difficult to achieve aesthetics, therefore a monophonic surface can be obtained by spraying with a spray gun;
- With oils. Before use, dilute with solvent;
- With water. Dries longer, but no toxic odor. The composition penetrates deeply, giving a more saturated shade and a clear picture that looks beautiful;
- Alcohol based. It dries quickly, but costs more and has a pungent odor.
To protect the tree from fungus, moisture and dirt, oil wax is used that penetrates deep into the surface. Coating gives durability and gloss.
If you choose what to paint the door surface, then you need to take into account the drying time and the resulting effect.
Preparing the canvas for painting
First, the door is removed from the hinges, laid on a flat surface. Before using alkyd paint, the canvas is best placed on the street or in a well-ventilated area. Then the door is locked so that all the elements are accessible. Accessories are also removed or wrapped with foil, and the locks are sealed with tape.
Door cleaning
Pre-cleaning, removal of old enamel or paint. For such purposes, it is better to use a grinding machine, and in its absence, the layer can be peeled off with an emery cloth of medium grain size. The resulting bubbles are eliminated by a hairdryer, which will heat up the paint layer to remove it with a spatula. An expensive and easy way to clean the surface are flushing compounds.
Layers of old paint can be removed with an abrasive nozzle on a drill. Pieces of dust and paint are swept away from the cloth, the surface is polished so that there are no scratches, irregularities or roughnesses. The surface is inspected from both sides, the density of the joints is analyzed, the frame can be strengthened with fasteners and metal corners.
Putty and sanding
New fillings close existing cracks and grooves. For alkyd paint, a composition of any color is suitable, and before applying oil impregnation, varnish or wax, the tone of the putty should correspond to the panel. Dry areas of the door are sanded with fine-grained sandpaper. At this stage, any defects are eliminated.
Antiseptic Coating
When applying paint, the surface is pre-treated with flame retardant and antiseptic impregnation (for example, Biotex) when the door is installed in the steam room. It is advisable to choose the means of one company, which will improve the interaction and quality of the coating.
After this, the door must be primed, after which a layer of putty is applied. It is necessary to process all areas of the door, as well as the gaps in the decorative details, between the jamb and the lintel. After the putty dries, the surface is repacked again.
Staining technology
If a new painting is being painted, then it should be protected from swelling. Pre-lay it on a flat surface, treated with sandpaper or a grinder. Then the panel is primed, recesses and smooth sections are processed. After the surface dries, a secondary treatment is carried out.
The old door of the house must be painted with high quality so that there are no stains and smudges on its surface. It is hardly necessary to buy a spray gun for painting one or two paintings, so you can use a panel brush or roller.
After you have chosen how to paint a wooden door, you should familiarize yourself with some of the nuances of work:
- fluff the brush by removing poorly fixed hairs;
- to properly paint the shield door you need in 3 stages, using the roller, from the upper left corner you need to shift to the right, covering the entire canvas. After drying, the door must be processed in the longitudinal direction. Then you need to paint the canvas from the upper right corner;
- when processing a panel cloth, you need to use a brush, treat the surface carefully, avoiding excess coating.
Alkyd enamel painting
To cover the doors with alkyd enamel, the following steps should be performed:
- remove the cloth from the hinges so that paint stains do not appear on the surface. Then with a spatula and sandpaper you need to remove scuffs and old layer, thoroughly rinse the surface and inspect for defects. Chips and cracks are putty, the surface is dried and sanded with a sandpaper. At the last stage, priming is carried out;
- the finished canvas rests on the horizontal surface of the floor, table or workbench, covered with polyethylene. Existing glass is sealed with tape. At the paneled door, the panels are first painted with a brush, and then the tabs. Subsequently, the entire panel is painted with a roller. With a two-layer application of alkyd enamel, the consumption will be 40-80 g / m2;
- Additionally, you can perform tinting the canvas under the wenge, soaking it with a special composition. The basis of this paint includes natural oils. After a layer of paint has been applied, it should be done with a rubber spatula or sponge about 10 times;
- You can take a liquid soap with paint. Initially, the panel is covered with paint and liquid soap. On the soap you need to apply another coating layer.
Stain Treatment
When choosing stain primer is not applied. The tool penetrates into the deeper layers of wood from pine or oak, dyeing its fibers and increasing protective properties. There are several ways to apply the composition: grinding, spraying, simple application and staining with a brush. Usually use simple application..
Since the stain will lie better on a damp cloth, it needs to be slightly moistened. First, dyeing is carried out along the fibers, and then across them. The next layer is in the direction of the fibers. From below we process a cloth with jambs so as not to disrupt the design of the structure.
After the stain with a water base has been applied, the surface should be sanded with a nylon sandpaper (due to the raised fibers), remove the dust and apply the next coat. If an alcohol stain is used, the fibers do not rise and grinding is not required. But aqueous formulations have no unpleasant odor and toxicity.
Oil or wax impregnation
There are nuances in the processing of oil-impregnated web. First, the composition of Pinotex is well mixed. If applied incorrectly, dark areas and streaks may appear. For work, use a brush, spray, roller or foam sponge. Depending on the porosity of the material, the number of layers will be calculated.
First, they gain a little composition, distributing it evenly across the width of the panel. Then the impregnation is rolled out or rubbed with a brush without sag. The drying time is 8-12 hours. Not later than in a day another layer is applied.
Wood imitation
To paint the interior doors under the tree with your own hands was done correctly, follow the instructions:
- apply light paint (beige, white, gray or yellow) to the building material;
- the dried surface is treated with liquid soap;
- cover with dark paint, remove liquid soap.
The wood structure can be performed on veneered material, treated with a special fiber brush (the effect is "antique"). Then one or more coatings must be applied to the surface and sanded.
How to paint laminated doors
Compared to natural wood doors, laminated products look aesthetically pleasing, easy to use and affordable. To process laminated doors, you will need a roller or brush, putty on wood with a spatula, sandpaper, rags, solvent and special enamel.
The surface is completely ground, cleaned with a rag from dust and putty with a thin layer. After the putty is dried, sandpaper is applied, applied a second time and sanded again after drying. Before painting, the composition is diluted with a solvent. The paint is applied carefully, paying attention to hard-to-reach areas. After 3 layers, the result is fixed with varnish.
If there are no defects, you can update the laminate. Suitable tinted varnish or stain, which is applied after grinding and tinting.
Door color recommendations
The choice of color of the panel is carried out based on the wishes. Key recommendations include:
- drying the surface before applying alkyd enamel;
- combination of a shade of a cloth with furniture;
- the choice of doors from solid wood, coated with oil, for a wooden dwelling;
- a combination of an old door with antique objects;
- choice of doors with dark tinting for lacquered furniture;
- the use of paints with a water composition.
In the process of painting the door, you must follow the safety equipment and precautions.
